What Is a Split King Adjustable Bed? A Complete Beginner's Guide

A split king adjustable bed lets each partner control their own side of the bed independently. Here's everything you need to know before buying one — how they work, what they cost, and whether one is right for you.

How a Split King Adjustable Bed Works

A split king adjustable bed is simple in concept: two Twin XL adjustable bases placed side by side, each with its own motor and remote control. Together, they form a king-size sleeping surface (76" x 80"), but each half operates independently.

Think of it as two separate beds that look like one.

The Components

2 Adjustable Bases

Twin XL size (38" x 80") each. Contains motors for head and foot elevation. Each has its own remote or app control. Some include massage, under-bed lighting, and USB ports.

2 Twin XL Mattresses

One per base. Must be compatible with adjustable bases (memory foam, latex, or hybrid — not innerspring). Each person can choose a different firmness level.

Bed Frame (optional)

A king bed frame contains both bases and prevents separation. Not required but strongly recommended.

Split King Sheets

Two Twin XL fitted sheets + one king flat sheet. Regular king fitted sheets won't work. See our sheet guide

Size Comparison: Split King vs. Other Beds

SizeDimensionsPer PersonIndependent?
Twin XL38" x 80"38" (1 person)N/A
Queen60" x 80"30"No
King76" x 80"38"No
Split King76" x 80"38"Yes
Split Queen60" x 80"30"Yes

Notice that a split king gives you the same total space as a regular king — the only difference is that each side moves independently.

Pros and Cons of a Split King Adjustable Bed

Pros

  • +Independent control — Each partner adjusts their own side
  • +Different firmness levels — Choose different mattresses for each side
  • +Zero motion transfer — Movement on one side doesn't affect the other
  • +Health benefits — Elevate head for snoring/GERD, feet for circulation
  • +Widest selection — Most brands offer split king

Cons

  • -Center gap — A seam between the two mattresses (fixable)
  • -Higher cost — Two bases + two mattresses = roughly 2x the price
  • -Special sheets needed — Must buy split king or Twin XL sheets
  • -Bases can separate — Need frame or connectors to keep together
  • -Room size — Needs at least 12' x 12' room

Who Should Get a Split King Adjustable Bed?

A split king is ideal if:

  • You and your partner have different sleep needs — one snores, one has reflux, one reads in bed, etc.
  • You want different mattress firmness levels — one likes firm, one likes soft
  • One partner is a restless sleeper — split bases eliminate motion transfer completely
  • You have health conditions — GERD, sleep apnea, back pain, poor circulation (see seniors guide)
  • Your room fits a king bed — you need at least 12' x 12'

A split king probably isn't worth it if you're a single sleeper (get a Queen or Twin XL adjustable instead), you're on a tight budget, or your room is too small for a king.

How Much Does a Split King Setup Cost?

A complete split king setup requires buying components separately (or as a bundle). Here's a realistic cost breakdown:

ComponentBudgetMid-RangePremium
2 Adjustable Bases$1,100$2,000$4,400
2 Twin XL Mattresses$600$1,400$3,000
Bed Frame$200$400$800
Split King Sheets$35$80$200
Total$1,935$3,880$8,400
